Looking For Banner Printing Kona? Here Are 5 Things You Should Know for Quick-Turnaround Events

If you’ve lived or worked in Kona for any length of time, you know that things happen fast. One week you’re planning a quiet community gathering, and the next, you’re coordinating a major business convention at a local resort or preparing for a rush of visitors during the IRONMAN season. In the middle of that whirlwind, one of the most effective tools in your marketing toolkit is the humble, hard-working banner.

Whether it’s draped across a booth at the Sheraton, hanging from a fence on Kuakini Highway, or announcing a grand opening in the industrial area, a well-designed banner does the heavy lifting of brand awareness for you. But when you’re on a tight deadline, you don’t just need a banner: you need a high-quality sign that can handle our unique Hawaii climate and get into your hands before the doors open.

At Kona Impact, we’ve helped thousands of Big Island businesses navigate the stress of event prep. We’ve seen what works, what fails in the midday sun, and how to get professional results on a timeline that would make mainland companies sweat.

Here are five things you should know about banner printing in Kona to ensure your next event is a success.

1. The Power of Local: The 2-Day Turnaround Advantage

When you’re planning an event, shipping is often your biggest enemy. We’ve all been there: you find a "cheap" printer online, only to realize that shipping a heavy vinyl banner to Hawaii costs more than the banner itself. Even worse, if there’s a delay at the hub or a flight is cancelled, your banner might arrive three days after your event is over.

One of the things we are most proud of at Kona Impact is our ability to offer a two-day turnaround on most banner projects. Because we do everything in-house right here in Kailua-Kona, we don’t have to wait for a barge or a plane.

Efficient local banner production with 2-day turnaround

By choosing a local shop, you gain:

  • Zero Shipping Stress: No tracking numbers, no "out for delivery" anxiety. You just drive over and pick it up.
  • Direct Communication: If you have a question about your colors or your file, you can talk to us directly. We live here, we work here, and we care about your project as much as you do.
  • Emergency Fixes: If you realize at the last minute that you need a second banner, we can usually make it happen. You can't get that kind of personal service from a mainland giant.

2. Material Matters: Surviving the Kona Sun and Wind

Not all banners are created equal. If you’ve ever seen a banner that’s faded to a ghostly grey after two weeks or one that’s shredded by the afternoon tradewinds, you know that Hawaii weather is tough on signage.

When we print banners, we consider the specific environment where they’ll be displayed. Here are the two most common types we recommend for our local climate:

13 oz Scrim Vinyl

This is the "gold standard" for most banners. It’s a heavy-duty, reinforced material that handles humidity and rain like a champ. For indoor conventions or short-term outdoor events, this is almost always the right choice. It provides a smooth surface for high-resolution graphics and vibrant colors.

Mesh Vinyl

If your banner is going on a fence near the ocean or in a spot that catches a lot of wind, we often suggest mesh. Mesh banners have tiny holes that allow air to pass through, reducing the "sail effect" that can rip a solid banner right off its grommets. It keeps your message visible without putting too much stress on the structure holding it up.

We also use UV-resistant inks in our wide-format printers. This is crucial because the UV index in Kona is no joke. Our inks are designed to stay vibrant even when the sun is beating down on them all afternoon.

3. Design for the "3-Second Rule"

At an event or on the roadside, you usually only have about three seconds to capture someone’s attention. If your banner is cluttered with too much text or tiny photos, people will just keep walking (or driving) by.

When designing your banner, keep these professional tips in mind:

  • Big and Bold: Your main message should be the largest thing on the banner. If people are viewing it from 20 feet away, your letters should be at least 2–3 inches tall.
  • High Contrast: Dark text on a light background (or vice versa) is the easiest to read. Think black on yellow or white on royal blue.
  • Keep it Simple: Logo, main value proposition, and a clear call to action (like a website or a "Visit Booth #12" instruction). That's often all you need.
  • High-Resolution Graphics: Since banners are large, your images need to be high quality. If you pull a tiny thumbnail off Google, it’s going to look like a blurry mess when blown up to six feet wide. Aim for at least 100–150 DPI at the final print size.

4. Finishing Touches: Why Hems and Grommets are Non-Negotiable

A banner is only as good as the way it’s hung. We’ve seen people try to save a few dollars by skipping the finishing process, only to have their banner sag, wrinkle, or tear within hours.

At Kona Impact, we believe professional finishing is part of the job, not an optional extra.

  • Heat-Welded or Taped Hems: We fold the edges of the vinyl over and secure them. This doubles the thickness of the material around the perimeter, which prevents the edges from curling and gives the grommets something solid to bite into.
  • Metal Grommets: We place sturdy metal eyelets (grommets) around the edges: usually every two to three feet. This allows you to use zip ties, bungee cords, or rope to pull the banner taut.

Pro-tip: When you’re hanging your banner, use bungee cords instead of rigid rope if you’re outdoors. The bungees have a little "give" that allows the banner to flex during a gust of wind, which significantly extends the life of the sign.

5. How to Order Like a Pro (And Save Time)

When you're working on a tight schedule for an upcoming event, the goal is to get your file into the printer as quickly as possible. Every hour spent going back and forth on design tweaks is an hour your banner isn't being printed.

To ensure your order moves through our shop at lightning speed, here is what we look for:

  • Finalized Files: Triple-check your dates, times, and spelling before you send the file. Correcting a "July" to "June" after the banner is printed is a heartbreak we want to help you avoid!
  • Vector or High-Res Files: If you have your logo in a vector format (like an .AI or .EPS file), that’s the best. If not, a high-resolution PDF or JPEG works too.
  • Bleed and Margins: Keep your important text at least 2 inches away from the edge. This ensures that nothing gets cut off or covered up by a grommet.
