Guide: Using Canva to Create Sign and Banner Files

Canva.com can be a good place to design your own sign files. Unfortunately, all the default settings on Canva are optimized for web graphics, not printed output. The default settings – PNG file in the RGB color space are not ideal for printed output: PDF in CMYK. The details of these differences is beyond the scope of this post. I can guarantee, though, that your sign provider, including Kona Impact, will be much happier — and probably charge you less — if they receive a PDF file in CMYK instead of a PNG file in RGB.

### 1. Start with the Correct Canvas Size

Here is how to set up a file for your sign professional.

When designing a sign or banner in Canva, start by setting up your document to the exact final print size.

**Example sizes:**
– Yard sign: 24 × 18 inches
– Banner: 36 × 96 inches (3 × 8 ft)
– Poster: 18 × 24 inches

**Steps:**

1. Go to Canva → **Create a design** → **Custom size**.
2. . Select **Inches** as the unit.
3. Enter the final size you need (e.g., 36 × 96 in).
4. Click **Create new design**.

> ✅ Tip: If your design is too large for Canva’s limit (maximum 83 × 33 in), design it **to scale** (e.g., half-size). If you scale down, make sure all text and logos remain legible. Tell your print provider the scale you used. For example, if you want an 8′ x 4′ banner, design it at 4′ x 2′ (half-size). Then tell Kona Impact that you want it at 2X size. Note that if you design it as a square at 2′ x 2′, it cannot be converted to a rectangle at 8′ x 4′. Proportions can’t change.

### 2. Design for Print Quality

To make sure your sign prints sharply:

– Use **high-resolution images** (at least 150 dpi at full size).
– Keep important text **1 inch away** from all edges to avoid trimming or grommet holes.
– Avoid using very thin text or light gray tones on white backgrounds.
– Use bold, high-contrast colors for readability, especially for outdoor or drive-by signage.
– We do not charge extra for color, so use as much as you’d like!

### 3. Use CMYK-Compatible Colors

Canva primarily works in RGB color mode (for screens), but print shops typically use CMYK (for ink). Colors will shift slightly when printing.

To minimize color differences:
– Stick with **Canva’s Print colors**—avoid fluorescent or very bright tones.
– Avoid transparency and gradient overlays when possible.
– When you export, select the **CMYK PDF** option (see below).

### 4. Export for Printing

Once your design is ready:

1. Click **Share** in the upper right corner.
2. Choose **Download**.
3. For **File type**, select **PDF Print**.
4. Under **Color Profile**, choose **CMYK (best for professional printing)**.
5. Check the following options:

– ✅ **Crop marks and bleed** (DO NOT select for Kona Impact)

– ✅ **Flatten PDF** (optional, ensures text and effects stay intact)

6. Click **Download**.

Your file will be saved as a CMYK PDF suitable for professional printers.

### 5. Send to Kona Impact

When sending your file:

– Include details about your **final desired size** and **quantity**.

– If you designed to scale, clearly note the scale (e.g., “Design is at 50% size – please print at 200%”).

– Always include your **contact info** in your message.

### Quick Checklist Before Exporting

– [ ] Correct final size (in inches or scaled clearly)

– [ ] Text and logos are sharp and within safe margins

– [ ] Background extends fully to the edge

– [ ] Colors are bold, high contrast, and print-friendly

– [ ] Exported as **PDF Print (CMYK)** with crop marks if required

**Summary:**

Using Canva for sign and banner designs is simple as long as you start with the correct size, design with print-safe margins, and export as a CMYK PDF. This ensures your file looks professional and prints accurately at Kona Impact or any other sign shop.
